Title Calla Lily Festival
Introduction Bamboo Lake (Zhuzihu) is located within Yangmingshan National Park at 670 meters above sea level situated between Mt. Datun and Mt. Qixing. It was originally a natural barrier lake formed following a volcanic eruption. As the lake water receded, it left behind fertile soil that became an agricultural settlement. In the past, the area was planted with Arrow and Moso bamboo, and the bamboo would sway and dance when the wind blew, giving the appearance of waves on a lake surface—hence the name “Bamboo Lake.” The Bamboo Lake area has a cold and wet climate with much rain and fog, and with a clean, pure source of water, Bamboo Lake is the perfect environment for growing calla lilies. In the alternating warmth and cold of early spring, the mist and the whiteness of the lilies turn the entire area into one vast, romantic scene. The blue magpie and the white egret are often seen flitting in and out between the green and white of the lily fields, a site that attracts numerous skilled photographers and newcomers and a testimony to the beauty and romance of the scene. The theme of the 2013 Bamboo Lake Calla Lily Festival is “The Romance of the Calla Lily.” Aside from the romantic calla lily itself, every scenic spot, every garden, every part of the landscape is enveloped in “love.” A romantic surrounding focusing on flower designs creates an atmosphere of love at Bamboo Lake. In addition, the local flower farms are invited to participate in a “Calla Lily Landscape Competition” where lilies and seasonal flowers are used to create beautiful landscapes. Flowers from the top three winners are given to visitors in the hope that they will visit the festival once again the following year.
